Nicaragua Surf Holiday
Nicaragua, some call it "the new Costa Rica", some say it's better than Costa Rica since the offshore winds , ideal for surfing, hardly ever stop blowing.
In recent years Nicaragua has been getting more exposure because the pro surfers started coming over, the articles have appeared in Surfing and Surfer magazine.
What the Pro's discovered is what a select few locals have know for a while now: Nicaragua is a great surf destination for surfers of all levels.
The Surf and weather in the Nicaragua
The surf here is among the best in Central America; Solid groundswells combined with offshore winds 90% of the time create solid waves with nice long barrels ( see the photo gallery below).
But it's not just waves for experts surfers in Nicaragua, the beach break is very suitable for beginners and intermediates as well.
The Surf Spots at the Nicaragua surf holiday:
Playa Colorado's: a fast left and right breaking wave in front of a ri vermouth. This wave is mostly suitable for advanced surfers, since it's hollow and fast, ideal for getting some shade in the barrel.
Panga Drops: Left and right wave breaks a bit further out, suitable for surfers of pretty much all levels, unless it gets over double overhead and it becomes a bit harder to paddle out there, since it requires a bit of duck diving or good timing. Fun wave.
Right hander on the North side of the bay: clean right hander that needs a bit of swell before it starts breaking properly. Intermediates to advanced surfers.
The beach breaks all along the bay: Ideal for beginners to learn the basics of surfing: paddling, duck diving, getting up on the board
The above surf spots are located on a bay within a private community , so unless people come in with a boat, access is restricted to people staying within the gated community ( which you will be)
Surf season Nicaragua
Swell comes in year round, picks up South , West and North swells. From March trough to October the south swells provide the best barrels, yes officially it's the rainy season, but normally this mean 1-2 hours of downpour, and than it's back to normal sunny skies.
However October and November can see some real heavy rain, so it's best to avoid this period of the year.
Between December and early March the swells are normally smaller, but normally a head high wave can still be found.
