Surfing in the Dominican Republic
The main surf spot for people in Cabarete is the lovely Playa Encuentro, a short 5 minute drive west of town; When you stay at he Encuentro surf apartments the beach is a 2 minute walk , for people that prefer the surf camp it's a 5-10 minute drive away.
The break is great for beginners, intermediates and experts alike. One of the great features of Encuentro is it's consistency, it rarely goes flat. Wave sizes vary from shoulder high to double overhead.
Don't think that surfing is limited to only the Cabarete area - for advance surfers, secret spots and off-shore reefs abound and let's not forget Preciosa (pictured above), a breathtakingly pristine surf spot, which on its day, will rival any other surf break in the world.
About the town:
Cabarete with it's beautiful bay full of water sport enthusiasts. At night, this bay turns in to the ultimate party place, with restaurants, bars and clubs located directly on the beach.

Its warm all year round!
Air and water temperatures never drop below 20 degrees Celsius (72 Fahrenheit). So leave your wetsuit behind, you won't even need a shortie here, just a rash vest and lots of sunscreen!

Surfing Season Dominican Republic.......
All year round, but winter has bigger north swells, for the more experienced surfers. As mentioned above, the surf rarely goes flat and for beginners Cabarete / Encuentro has a great safe area, ideal for learning how to surf.

Getting there:
The best airport to fly into is Puerto Plata (airport code POP). JetBlue does direct flights from New York, for budget fares. American Airlines (AA.com) flies directly from Miami to POP also pretty cheap. From Europe there's a number of charters that go here on a regular basis.
